Manual Lymphatic Massage
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is similar to a light massage, designed to help stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid throughout the body. It is based on the theory that gentle stretching and rhythmic pumping on the skin will help to detoxify the lymphatic system and help enhance the immune system. With the use of gentle, carefully guided movements & touch, MLD is also used to help relieve pain and induce a state of relaxation.
At the Alliance Institute, your MLD therapy session may also include a partial or full body massage (please let the therapist know if you prefer a light or deep tissue massage).
Conditions that MLD may be used for include:
Swelling – Swelling (or edema) can result from injuries, surgeries, or sluggish lymphatics. MLD may help to relieve pain and promote healing by accelerating the movement of lymphatic fluid to healthier parts of the body for re-absorption. With chronic edema, MLD may also help to improve the local circulation and reduce the chance of infection. Some seek MLD prior to surgery to prepare the tissues and decrease post-surgical swelling.
Breast Cancer - MLD is particulary useful in patients who develope lymphedema of the arm following mastectomy and lymph node dissection.
Sinus Conditions – MLD may be used to help drain the tissues of the face and neck; the theory is that it can help to facilitate drainage of the sinuses, increase circulation of the face and reduce infections.
Burns & Scars – Stimulation of the skin and circulation of the lymphatics may help to encourage healing and diminish the appearance of burns and scars.
Overall Improvement of General Health & Well-being – By reducing pain and stress, the use of MLD helps a person to relax fully, and often feel energized, by the end of the session.
