Back To School: Re-Think Your Lunch

December 22, 2020

This time of year those of us with children have been busy getting them ready to go back to school. Even if you don’t have children, the Labor Day weekend marks the official end of summer. Many jobs are a little more laid back in the summer but now things start to ramp back up.

As you drop into a more regular routine, consider starting a new habit this year of packing your lunch instead of eating out.

What’s in your lunch bag?

Packing a lunch bag may be the last thing on your to do list. Maybe you grab some fast food from a place around your job or skip it all together because you are too busy to eat. Both of these habits can lead to unwanted weight gain, afternoon energy slump, and brain fog.

Be your own parent again and make a commitment to pack your own lunch for a week. Not only will it save you money but you will take back control of your health in this small way.

If you need a little extra motivation, take advantage of all the back to school sales and buy yourself a stylish adult lunch bag. Sometimes all it takes is this simple change to be excited about packing your lunch again.

Lunch Ideas

  • BLT sandwich on whole grain bread with mashed avocado instead of mayonnaise.
  • Curry chicken salad in pita bread with sprouts on top. Add a small cup of soup if you exercised that day.
  • Quinoa tabbouleh salad with wild salmon.

The goal is to keep it simple and healthy. Balance is key as well as portion sizes. You want to have a small amount of complex carbohydrates, a lean protein, a little fat, and a large dose of vegetables. If you are able, considering adding a 10 minute walk after lunch to help keep your energy balanced and aid with digestion.
