The Organic Acid Test (OAT) offers a comprehensive metabolic snapshot of a patient’s overall health with 76 markers. It provides an accurate evaluation of intestinal yeast and bacteria. Abnormally high levels of these microorganisms can cause or worsen behavior disorders, hyperactivity, movement disorders, fatigue, and immune function. Many people with chronic illnesses and neurological disorders often excrete several abnormal organic acids in their urine. The cause of these high levels could include oral antibiotic use, high sugar diets, immune deficiencies, acquired infections, as well as genetic factors.
This Organic Acid Test also includes markers for vitamin and mineral levels, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter levels, and is the only OAT to include markers for oxalates, which are highly correlated with many chronic illnesses.
If abnormalities are detected using the OAT, treatments can include supplements, such as vitamins and antioxidants, or dietary modification. Upon treatment, patients and practitioners have reported significant improvement such as decreased fatigue, regular bowel function, increased energy and alertness, increased concentration, improved verbal skills, less hyperactivity, and decreased abdominal pain.
Do I need to stop taking any of my medications or fast before I collect my sample?
Please do not stop any of your medications before collecting your sample. Fasting is not required, but a 12-hour fast prior to collection is recommended. If you have specific concerns, please contact our office.
How do I collect the urine specimen?
Step 1: Write your first and last name, date of birth, gender and date of collection on the clear-cap plastic vial, using a permanent marker. To ensure accurate test results you must provide all the requested information.
Step 2: Empty bladder before going to bed at night. Do not collect this urine.
Step 3: Collect first morning urine into a clean container.
Step 4: Pipette urine, using a fresh disposable pipette, into the clear-cap plastic vial to the 12 ml mark (DO NOT OVERFILL). Screw the cap on tightly.
Step 5: Dispose of remaining urine.
Step 6: Freeze the clear-cap plastic vial and ice pack.
